Encyclopedia is a knowledge-building work that develops into something tangible during our journey. It collects people’s definitions to what is around them – things like “home” or “nail”, or “dog”. Common objects. On the basis of those words, it develops into the big picture. Depicting what? Today’s people – through the words people assign to things making up their world.
It is a topical work, carried out by ancient means – by traveling from city to city, through theatre and country festivals, touching upon different realities in search of a new collaboration. At the end of every local inquiry, a performance is held in return, during which interviewers resume their costumes as artists, and read out the definitions given to everyone.
The Encyclopedia develops following the alphabet during a simultaneously physical and literary journey. The project began in summer 2013 at the Inequilibrio Castiglioncello Festival in Livorno. It was then carried on at a honey-themed street festival in Cisternino (Apulia), and at the Forme di vita teatrali (Theatrical Lifeforms) Fermenti Festival in Giarola (Parma). In 2014 it stopped by at the opening of a new space – called Impact Hub – in Florence and walked along the streets of Milan’s Isola district. The project will carry on touring different cities and realities, gradually expanding the boundaries of a seemingly endless work as well as the number of its participants.
