Body and Soul is first and foremost a show on the concept of time. It is an original work based on a Baroque performance. Entitled “Rappresentatione di Anima, et di Corpo” (Representation of the Soul, et of the Body”), this work was first performed to an audience in Rome in 1600. It consisted of one of the earliest dramas posti in musica per recitar cantando” (“in music in recitative style”), focused on a – continuously enriched, interrupted and then resumed -dialogue between two meaningful characters, i.e. Body and Soul.
This show anticipated the operatic genre by many years, and was created on the basis of a misinterpretation of ancient drama – believed by contemporaries to be recited singing – and of the authors’ experimentation. This innovative style marked the beginning of a new collaboration, turning into a joint project between performers and other professionals from various backgrounds – music and theater, fashion and philosophy.
Today, this old material is brought back to life. Why? In order to create a performance on time, again. But time as in now. In a game of interferences and meddling, the plot is enriched by new characters. Characters and words creep into the old drama’s structure, made up of a prologue, a musical interlude, and a conclusion. They are the result of literary interference, contemporary residue and waste deposits. Thus, out of the mix of past and future, nostalgia and innovation comes the portrait of a generation walking through time in search of their future.
